José Rizal University (JRU) (Pamantasang Jose Rizal) (Formerly José Rizal College / JRC) is a non-sectarian, non-stock private educational institution. It is located at Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City, Philippines. It was founded in 1919 by Vicente Fabella, who was the first Philippine Certified Accountant.
José Rizal University joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1927. The varsity team are the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers. It is one of the schools situated in the East Side of Mandaluyong city, the others being Arellano University - Plaridel High School and Don Bosco Technical College.
José Rizal University was originally established as Far Eastern College in 1919 and its name was changed to José Rizal College in 1922. First located at Arlegui Street, the College transferred to R. Hidalgo Street soon afterwards, moving to its present location in Mandaluyong in 1949. It remained closed throughout the Japanese Occupation, as its head had joined the guerilla movement. Don Vincente Fabella was the first Filipino to obtain a Certificate in Public Accountancy from the United States making as the First Filipino Certified Public Accountant.
Originally offering commerce and high school degrees, the College expanded its offerings to include an elementary school, education and liberal arts at the undergraduate level, and law, business administration, public administration, and education at the graduate level. It has its own research publication, the Journal of Business, Education and Law. The College is especially proud of Ramon Magsaysay who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1933 and who subsequently became the 7th President of the Philippines.
Jose Rizal University was granted autonomous status by CHED "from 6 October 2009 to 5 October 2012".[1][2] This is the highest form of certification that can be granted to a Higher Education Institution. As at end of October 2009, only 44 (2.5%) out of 1,726 higher educational institutions in the Philippines had been granted autonomous status by CHED.[3]

Law School
Objectives
The primary purpose of the law school is to prepare men and women to meet the needs of progress and modern technology in the various aspects of the practice of law. These needs call not only for technical skills but also for responsible leadership in the development of the law and the administration of justice. It is in response to these needs that the four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) was offered in 1967.

Courses Offered
All courses offered in the College Division are recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines. In addition, the undergraduate programs have been accredited by the Philippine Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines, and qualified by the Commission on Higher Education and the Department of Education, Culture and Sports.
The collegiate undergraduate programs in Commercial Science, Liberal Arts and Education have been granted Level III accreditation by Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation and the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines, and qualified by the Commission on Higher Education.
In addition, the University was granted a deregulated status by the Commission on Higher Education to recognize its commitment and contribution to the promotion of quality education. Only 50 universities in the Philippines have this seal.

Student Activities
Extracurricular activities provide special opportunities for students to participate in interest groups and programs of their own choosing; all of which provide significant opportunity to develop qualities of leadership.
Students Organizations
There are several of student organizations in the campus, all under the leadership of students with faculty supervision. From time to time, the different organizations sponsor convocations and open forum on subjects of current interest; notable speakers with special knowledge of the topic are usually invited.
The Central Student Council
The highest student body on the campus, prepares students for leadership in the community outside the College. It is composed of the officers of the different recognized campus organizations and advised by a senior faculty member. It has the basic task of coordinating student activities in which the whole student body has direct interest.
The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA)
This organization is composed of students who major in Accounting. It is an honor society devoted to the promotion of accounting research. It aims to develop the students to become practitioners in accountancy in the future.

Student Activities
The High School has an active Student Catholic Action unit. Holy Mass is celebrated every first Friday of the month at the school campus. Religious instruction is conducted on a voluntary arrangement to interested Catholic students. The prayer room in Room C-14 is open during schools hours, where the students of all denominations may meditate.
Literary and musical programs, convocations featuring noted resource persons, and other social gatherings are frequently held at the campus for further educational and cultural enrichment.
The homeroom provides an opportunity for close teacher-student relationships, more effective practice of social group living and better group guidance activities.
Complete computer facilities are provided for the students' hands-on experience to reinforce the lessons learned in ordinary classrooms.

Student Publications
The High School student body publishes a high school student organ, The Scroll, completely managed and edited by students. Students are encouraged to write and publish original articles in this school organ. They are given the opportunity to express themselves freely through writing. Managing the school paper imbues the students' minds with the significance of responsibility and work, and plays an important role in the development of a mature student body. A yearbook, The Blue and Gold, is a project of, and published annually by, the senior class.

Student Activities
In the Elementary School, teachers encourage pupils to participate in various school activities to maximize their potentials and abilities. Co-curricular activities are planned to build the pupil's self-confidence and self-esteem.
Elementary School Clubs
Science and Math Club
The group is composed of selected pupils from the intermediate grades. It aims to develop and master skills that will enable each member to cope with changes in their physical environment and to find relevance in what they can discover from their own experiences with things around them. The club is sponsoring the "Battle of the Young Rizalians" - a quiz bee like contest for grades IV, V and VI pupils who excel in Science, Mathematics and Civics and Culture.
English and Filipino Club
Pupils are encouraged to develop their communication skills through these organizations. The training method includes group dynamics, discussions, etc. Both clubs are sponsoring different contests such as declamation, spelling, story telling, essay writing and comprehension skills.
Social Builders Club
Good citizenship training starts in the elementary level. Through this organization, pupils become aware of the need for socialization. One must know himself and the world around him to be able to live meaningfully. The club is co-sponsoring the "Battle of the Young Rizalians".
Young Rizalians Artists Club
Pupils with special talent in the field of arts like acting, drawing or painting are given opportunities to further enrich their special skills by exposing them to various training, activities and competitions in and outside the school. They are encouraged to join other club activities to create an integrated exercise of pupils' potentials.
Blue and Gold Pipers and Choir
Elementary school pupils who love music are trained to become members of (1) Blue & Gold Pipers - the group of young bamboo flutists, and (2) Blue & Gold Choir - the group of young boys and girls representing the JRU ES chorale. The clubs seek to promote self-realization, raise cultural awareness and develop interpersonal relationship among its members through the realm of music. The groups perform in different programs and activities in the entire school community.
Young Pupils Catholic Action
The club aims to build a Christ-centered community among the young members of the school wherein Christian values are learned, lived and shared among themselves and with other people outside the school campus, thus helping them prepare for their future tasks as Christian leaders.
National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines)
Jose Rizal University has participated in the NCAA Philippines since 1927. The Bombers emblem features a man riding on a bomb, with the letters "JRU" ("JRC" when the school was Jose Rizal College) on his face. The school got the name "bombers" because of the rumored underground bombs on the campus area from the country's Japanese period.
"Heavy Bombers" is the title of the collegiate teams, while "Light Bombers" is for the High School Teams.

Alumni
During its more than half a century of existence, the University has achieved the singular distinction of having produced a remarkable number of successful graduates who have enjoyed the respect of the nation. Among them are included a President of the Philippines, a justice of the Supreme Court, several members of the legislature and of the Cabinet, senior members of the executive branch of government and the Foreign Service, heads of banks and financial corporations, heads of educational institutions, acknowledged leaders in the various fields of industry, commerce and agriculture, and armed forces officers of general rank.
The alumni are organized into a very active JRU Alumni Association, and holds a widely attended reunion early in February each year. The Association has been very active in various programs of support for the University, including the construction of a very ornate Alumni Gate at the main entrance to the campus, the installation of a non-denominational chapel, other infrastructure projects such as street overpasses, to say nothing of an ever-increasing scholarship fund.
Popular Culture
- JRU is nicknamed Hopia Factory since one of its buildings used to be the site of a Hopia (Chinese moon cake) factory.
- JRU held the second place in 2008. Ever since the school's near victory, its range of available souvenir items has widened, from T-shirts to stickers, ID laces, pens, and even distilled mineral water.
