The University of Asia and the Pacific (abbreviation: UA&P) is a private university in the Philippines. It traces its beginnings to the Center for Research and Communication (CRC), which was established in 1967 as a private think-tank that conducted economic and social research and offered graduate courses in economics. It gradually expanded its educational activities to other fields such as potanism

The spiritual and doctrinal formation given in the University is entrusted to Opus Dei, a Personal Prelature of the Catholic Church.

UA&P strives to be a think-tank and a research center for business, economics, and management.[1] The university is divided into three administrative faculties: the Faculty of Humanities, which contains the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS); the Faculty of Social Science and Technology, which contains the School of Economics, School of Education, Institute of Information Technology Studies, and the Institute of Political Economy; and the Faculty of Business and Communications, which contains the School of Management and School of Communication.

The University offers the "3-2" program where students graduate with both an undergraduate degree in the Humanities and a Master's Degree in their specialization after only 5 years.[2] For the students' first 2 and a half years at the University, they will take courses under nine programs, prior to their selection of their specialization.[3] .

The University confers honors to students with a GPA of 1.50 or better.

A Board of Trustees, chaired by Dr. Placido Mapa, governs UA&P. Under it is the University's Management Committee, presided by University President Jose Maria Mariano, which oversees the university's various operations. The MANCOM is assisted by the University's Operations Committees (OPCOMs), representing the different schools, as well as the heads of the University's auxiliary offices.[citation needed]

The University admits applicants on the basis of their College Entrance Exam (CEE) results and high school grades. Involvement in the arts, athletics, and other worthwhile extra-curricular activities, as well as commitment to service and leadership, are also considered important. UA&P's freshman intake is always for the 1st semester of each school year.

UA&P also offers various scholarships to help students fiannce their graduate and undergraduate education. Merit scholarships are highly competitive study grants that may cover up to 100% of tuition fees based on the entrance exam scores and high school grades. The top applicants of each batch also receive a stipend and book allowance, plus a board and lodging allowance for provincial scholars. Valedictorians of select high schools may avail themselves of a 100% tuition fee grant, while salutatorians of select high schools may enjoy a 50% grant on tuition fees.

Moreover, the University gives financial assistance to Filipino students who meet certain criteria, such as the financial need as attested to by the family's finances as well as the entrance credentials and academic performance in high school. Grantees may be given up to 100% financial aid on tuition fees.

1967
UA&P was founded by former Philippine Department of Finance Secretary Dr. Jesus P. Estanislao [4] and renowned economist Dr. Bernardo M. Villegas, two Harvard graduates, as the Center for Research and Communication (CRC). CRC was established as a private voluntary organization with core operations in research and communication, together with training programs in industrial economics.

1970
A private meeting in Mexico with Opus Dei founder, Msgr. Josemaria Escriva saw Escriva ask Estanislao and Villegas to expand CRC's academic horizons internationally. On this year, CRC offered its first graduate program leading to a Master of Science degree in Industrial Economics [5].

1982
CRC moved to its new offices in Ortigas Center, Pasig, with its formal and informal programs having been established.

1987
CRC set up the Institute of Development Education, which would be the forerunner of the School of Education in what would be UA&P.

1989
CRC's College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) opened and admitted its first batch of college students.

1993
CRC applied for university status, and founded its Schools of Economics and Education. That same year, CRC also set up its Center for Management.

June 26, 1995
CRC was granted university status, converting CRC into the University of Asia and the Pacific. The signing by former Education Secretary Ricardo Gloria took place in a public school near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. On August 15 of the same year, UA&P was inaugurated in a ceremony led by the then newly appointed Commission on Higher Education Chairman Angel Alcala, Secretary Gloria, and Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Rosario Lopez [5].

Estanislao assumed the presidency of UA&P on November 28, 1995. Regional Vicar of Opus Dei in the Philippines Fr. Ramon Lopez was conferred the honorary title of Vice Grand Chancellor of the University.

The University competes in the Men's National Collegiate Athletics Association (MNCAA) and the Women's National Collegiate Athletics Association (WNCAA)[6]. The University supports teams in basketball, futsal, volleyball, tennis, badminton, swimming, arnis, taekwondo, and athletics. It also has a varsity dance troupe called Squadra.

In December 2008, the men's futsal team grabbed the championship cup in the MNCAA.

In October 2009, the women's basketball and volleyball[7] teams won the championship titles in the WNCAA.
